Thurston Hopkins Soho

Photojournalist Thurston Hopkins was 100 years old on 16th April 2013. He shot this fantastic picture at the infamous Gargoyle Club in Soho and it was published in the Picture Post in 1956.

 

Writing in this weeks Time Out, artist Ian Bruce sums up Soho as having "establishments that filter out bullshit: there's no fickle scene of twentysomethings. Money and celebrity are unimportant. Anyone is accepted as long as they are willing to engage in a little conversational sparring."
