Basket Jim - Covent Garden Market Porter

4 comments:

  1. This is my Dad's uncle Jimmy Sainsbury, capturing the world record in 1932 for carrying baskets at Covent Garden. Today, the fruit and vegetable market has gone, but has become a favourite tourist spot in the heart of the Theatre District of London. Back in Jim's days it was where all of London's fruit & veg was distributed and market porters would carry the fruit and veg in these baskets to the waiting lorries for shipping all over London and the surrounding counties.

  2. I am compiling research for a children's book about unique people of Covent Garden Market between 1850-1930. If you have any additional information to pass on about your Great Uncle, "Basket Jim", I'd love to correspond with you and find out more about him.
    Thank you,
