This innocent looking, ornate lamp in Carting Lane close
to the Savoy Hotel, was designed by JE Webb and was devised to work on methane
gas produced by the sewage system. This
early eco pioneer designed the Patent Sewer Ventilating Lamp in 1895 and sold the
design worldwide. The post is hollow to allow the gas to rise up to the
elements. Little did the guests at the Savoy realise that their effluent was
being used to illuminate the nearby alley. The lamp now runs on standard gas,
which in itself sounds antiquated.
