Gangle

Word of the Day for Saturday, October 5, 2013

gangle \GANG-guhl\, verb:
to move awkwardly or ungracefully: A tall, stiff-jointed man gangled past.
His long arms and legs seemed to gangle around the compact dimensions of his pony. He drew to a halt.
-- Jane Smiley, The All-True Travels and Adventures of Lidie Newton, 1998
Those long legs that used to gangle could run.
-- E.J. Rath, The Brains of the Family, 1925
Gangle arose in the 1960s as a back formation of the word gangling, a variant of the word gangrel.

The Tunnel

The Tunnel is in Leake Street, Waterloo. The sign says it all, well it would do if someone hadn't spryed graffiti over it.

Mods

Mods in Lower Marsh, South London. This is the generation that wanted to “die before I get old” but none seem to be in the first flush of youth.  Still, Mod is more a state of mind than what you wear or ride.

For a greater explanation of Mod culture I can wholeheartedly endorse the excellent “Mod, A Very British Style”, written by Richard Weight. If 473 pages of the good professor’s work are too weighty a tome then I suggest clicking here or here for an instant explanation.

 No rockers.
